President's Speech

President
Concrete is the most commonly used construction material on earth. In recent years, there has been rapid advancement in concrete technology, especially in high- strength concrete, high-performance concrete, self-consolidating concrete, high-early- strength concrete, building diagnostics, recycling and green concrete construction. However, concrete is to some extent local in the sense that the properties of the concrete are dependent on the local materials, local conditions and local practice. Hence, technology developed elsewhere may not be directly applicable to Hong Kong. Hong Kong has to carry out her own research. In fact, unlike in the past, concrete professionals in Hong Kong are nowadays very active in technology development and in areas such as high-strength concrete we are at the forefront of the technology.

However, it is not just a matter of developing more advanced technology. When we come to applications, we need appropriate standards, specifications, test methods, quality schemes, accreditations, certifications and training etc. Hence, to promote advancement in concrete technology, it requires the concerted effort of not only the suppliers but also the government, consultants, contractors and universities. In order to provide a platform for exchange of ideas among construction professionals interested in concrete technology and to facilitate technology advancement through standardization, accreditations, certifications and training, a group of engineers and academics have been advocating the formation of a local concrete institute. This Hong Kong Concrete Institute is the outcome of the many meetings among this group.

For the successful establishment of the Hong Kong Concrete Institute, we are most grateful to the encouragement of Ir. Dr. H. K. Cheng, J.P., Honorary Chairman of the Asian Concrete Construction Institute, to the drive of Ir. C. K. Cheung, who called the preparatory meetings, dealt with the legal formalities and set up the secretariat for the institute, and to the hard work of the founding members, who helped to organize everything. I take this opportunity to thank you all for your generous support.
